UPS Battery Replacement: When to Replace, What to Buy, and How to Do It Safely
I have replaced more UPS batteries than I can count. It is a ten-minute job that people either overpay a technician for, or avoid until the UPS dies at the worst possible moment. Here is the whole craft: when, what, and how.
When: The Three Signals
Signal 1 — the self-test fails. Your UPS tests its own battery automatically, usually weekly. When it fails, you get a replace-battery LED or periodic beeping — often one beep every 30 seconds or so. The unit is telling you plainly.
Signal 2 — runtime has collapsed. If your UPS used to hold your gear for 15 minutes during an outage and now dies in 5, the battery capacity is gone. You can verify with a controlled test: unplug the UPS from the wall with your equipment running and time it (save your work first).
Signal 3 — it is simply old. Sealed lead-acid batteries last 3-5 years in service. Less in hot environments. If you cannot remember when the battery was installed and the unit is over 3 years old, you are living on borrowed time. This is why I tell everyone to write the install date on the unit.
Any one signal is enough. You do not need all three.
What: OEM vs. Third-Party Cartridges
Every UPS model takes a specific battery cartridge or cell size. Find yours one of three ways:
- The UPS manufacturer’s website has a “find my battery” lookup — enter your model number (on the unit’s rear or bottom label).
- The companion software (PowerChute, PowerPanel) usually shows the battery part number.
- Open the battery door and read the label on the existing cartridge.
Then the choice:

My field rule: for a UPS protecting critical gear, OEM is worth the premium for zero questions. For home-office duty, a third-party cartridge from a brand with a real reputation and real reviews is a sensible save. The one thing I never install is a no-name cartridge priced suspiciously low — swollen, jammed cells are how that story ends, and prying a swollen battery out of a compartment is nobody’s idea of fun.
How: The Swap, Step by Step
- Shut down the connected equipment, then turn the UPS off and unplug it from the wall.
- Remove your jewelry. Rings, watches, metal bracelets — off. A metal bridge across battery terminals makes a brutal short circuit.
- Open the battery compartment — usually a front panel or a couple of screws on the bottom or rear.
- Disconnect the old battery: pull the connectors off the terminals one at a time. If they are stubborn, wiggle with insulated needle-nose pliers by the connector, never the wire. Note which color wire goes to which terminal (photo with your phone).
- Slide the old battery out, the new one in, and reconnect: match the terminals exactly as before. Connectors should seat fully with a firm push.
- Close up, plug in, power on. Most units run a self-test at startup. Let it charge fully (typically 8-16 hours) before trusting it, then run one more manual self-test.
The safety line: never short the terminals, never open the battery case itself, and if you see swelling, leakage, or corrosion damage beyond the terminals — stop, that unit needs professional eyes.
After the Swap
- Recycle the old battery — see the FAQ above. Never trash it.
- Sticker the unit with today’s date. Your future self thanks you.
- Watch the first week. If the replace-battery light comes back with a fresh battery, the problem is the UPS’s charging circuit, not the battery — that is replace-the-UPS territory.
The Bottom Line
Three to five years is the rhythm. When the signal comes, match the cartridge, respect the terminals, ten minutes of care — and a $40-70 battery buys you another full cycle out of a $150+ UPS. It is the best maintenance bargain in home electronics.
